Baby Carriers Australia was founded in 2014 by Kiley who, as a new mum, searched high and low for a wide range of carriers to suit every situation. Kiley was left disappointed at the range available, finding that most stores only offered two styles with the colour range leaving a lot to be desired.
So, Kiley went to work scouring the globe for the best baby carriers on offer. Fast forward two years, and Baby Carriers Australia now stock an impressive range of carriers including: Chekoh, MOBY, BabyBjorn, Manduca, Hug-a-Bub, Beco, Beachfront Baby, ByKay, Hippychick and Piggyback Rider. The collection caters for newborns right up to toddlers weighing in at 27kg. There’s stripes, spots, florals, leopard print, brights and soft hues to suit the most stylish of mamas.
Recently, the range expanded to include ‘Baby Essentials’- a modern collection of ‘must-haves’ for any mum on the go including; organic bibs, nappy bags, designer nappy change wallets, stylish teething accessories, travel high chairs, bottle bags, trolley covers and even dummy savers.
Hi Kiley can you please tell us a bit about your family?
Of course, they’re my favourite subject! I am married to Owen who I have to say, is THE most amazing husband and dad. He’s happy to get up to the kids, watches them while I work and is even the chef in our house. We have Hamish who’s 3 and just a delightful loving little fella / crazy toddler. It depends on the day! And recently, we had Samuel who’s 5 months old. He’s besotted with his big brother and it’s just beautiful to watch.
What are you passionate about?
So many things. First and foremost, I know it sounds corny but my children. We had them a bit later in life and we truly cherish them with everything we have. My third baby is Baby Carriers Australia, my business. We launched just a little over two years ago and I thrive on the challenge. Other than that, I love organic food (I even harvest my own honey) and long hikes through the wilderness.
What is your soul purpose?
Wow, what a tough question! When I’m looking at the big picture in life, I would certainty say it’s to be kind. I believe every interaction we have with others is an opportunity to make someone feel great.
How are you actively pursuing that?
Mindfulness and empathy. It’s easy for others to judge (particularly when it comes to motherhood!) but I steer clear of this sort of behavior. It doesn’t achieve anything. So yes, I’m mindful in all of my communications and I really aim to make people happy.
What does the perfect day look like for you and your family?
Oh that’s easy. In a perfect world the day would look like this: Both kids sleep through the night and I am woken late (maybe 6am?) to lovely toddler / baby cuddles. We spend the day pottering around, perhaps a hike and a play in the garden and settle down to a relaxed family dinner. Bliss. Our days are generally like this (well on the weekends when Owen’s not working), minus the sleep. I miss sleep.
Why is baby wearing important to you?
Well number one would be that it naturally increases the bond you have with your baby. Simply smelling your baby produces love hormones. So having Samuel strapped to my chest keeps me loved up all day. The second reason is that I’m a busy mum with a business so it’s super practical. I’m often working away at the computer, on the phone, doing the dishes – all while babywearing!
What are some of your favorite activities to do while baby wearing?
Hiking definitely. The added bonus is it’s a double workout as you’re carrying at the same time! Recently I even attended a wedding with Samuel sleeping peacefully on my chest. So basically anywhere I go, Samuel goes!
What have been your biggest struggles and successes you’ve experienced as a mumpreneur?
I think every entrepreneur experiences self doubt to some degree and I’ve definitely experienced my fair share. In the end though, staying true to myself has got me through those times.
And as a mum in business, it’s the juggle. Always the juggle and the mum guilt. Ie: when the kids are sick but I’ve got a to do list a mile long. If I give myself 100% to the kids, the business struggles and vice versa. I feel as though a happy balance is impossible. So some days the kids get all of me and sometimes hubby steps in so the business can get my full attention.
What do you do for mama’s me time?
I have a GREAT group of friends and we make a point of going away for the weekend once a year. We all have kids and we all go solo. It’s amazing to spend time connecting without any outside pressure or stress. Owen is great and regularly gives me breaks so I can rest and re-establish WHO I am when I’m not mum. I think this is just so crucial for every mum. It’s easy to get lost.
What gets you through the toughest days?
Recently Samuel had a slight health scare and we spent a couple of days in hospital. Being there made me realize how lucky I truly am to have mine and my families health. It’s so easy to get caught up in the little things that don’t matter. Finances, house work, business… so when I’m having a really dodgy day, I remember all the other families who aren’t as lucky as mine. That generally shakes me out of my funk.
