Now, we all know that pregnancy is a huge life altering event, one of the biggest a couple can go through. Most of us women have lots of resources at our disposal to equip us for the challenges ahead. We have books, our mama tribe, websites, apps and medical professionals to answer all of our questions and support us but our biggest source of support is usually still our husbands. So what happens if he’s totally clueless on the topic of pregnancy and labor? What if every time we ask him to read the baby books, to research things or talk about birth plans he kind of just gets this glazed over look on his face, kind of mumbles something then changes the subject?
All the books are written for women, all the apps use medical language that tends to go over our hubby’s heads. It’s a huge life event for men to become fathers too. All you have to do is look at the ever increasing belly bulge that blokes get when their wives get pregnant to know we’re not alone in feeling the life shift of pregnancy. Sometimes our men are so excited and want to support us but it’s way too overwhelming for them, we’re a minefield of emotions and they just simply don’t know how to help.
The reality is they need to be supported by other men who have been through it. Enter the “Who’s Your Daddy” App, an app written by men, for men with a little help from midwives. This app is being hailed internationally as the number one resource to help men support their wives through pregnancy. It’s the “what to expect when she’s expecting” app that is written in simple language using humorous references that only blokes would get (think dad jokes) and it is totally customizable.
There are a number of handy features in the Who’s Your Daddy App including weekly updates of how your baby is developing. The weights and measurements used in the app compare your baby to ‘the size of a beer bottle’ or ‘the weight of a hammer’ rather than fruit as most of the female apps do. It also offers tips like encouraging your hubby to plan a little trip away so you can spend some time together before baby arrives.
The app also features a timeline so your partner can see what milestones you have reached together and what you have to look forward to. He can also add these milestones to his calendar so he can receive helpful reminders, for example to get time off work to go with you to your ultrasound, or to research childbirth classes together. This will take the stress off you having to remind him.
Another great feature of the app that I love is the daily tips. Here are some examples:
- “You’re halfway there. Go out for dinner to celebrate.”
- “If she ever walks backwards don’t make the BEEP BEEP BEEP noise”
- “Keep telling her how beautiful she is”
There is also a number of tools for your partner to use like a checklist of things to pack in the hospital bag- one for mum, one for dad and one for baby. Hubby can also create ‘to do lists’ and a list of potential baby names. Then there’s the contraction counter built into the app that allows your man to monitor your development through the early stages of labor and gauge when to leave for the hospital or call your midwife.
The Who’s Your Daddy App is a wealth of knowledge and support for all expecting fathers and when dads feel supported they can more easily support us mamas. This app approaches pregnancy with the perfect amount of wit, wisdom and simplicity that dads around the world love and mothers around the world are loving the effects of.
“When my wife became pregnant, I realized how little I knew…This app is a godsend. It’s not a medical journal, it’s more like a knowledgeable mate that has been through it all. It makes you look good and takes the stress out of some situations. Got a little one on the way? Get this app”
